Where should you look for lapwing chicks in a field?

Not necessarily where the nest was. Lapwings may nest in grassy fields and then lead their chicks to wetter feeding areas, so the nesting ground and the chick-feeding ground may be different places. A dry-looking nest site can belong to a family that depends on damp soil nearby. Redshanks make a similar move.

If you only check the spot where an adult first alarmed, you may miss the brood entirely. Watch where the adults look and move instead. A conspicuous adult may be several metres from chicks that are very hard to see. Stay far enough away that the adults' behaviour settles, and keep your distance from alarm-calling birds.
