Can lapwing chicks fly when they leave the nest?

No. Lapwing chicks are precocial. They hatch with down and can walk away from the nest and feed for themselves soon after hatching. Don't mistake that early mobility for flight, though.

The usual fledging period is 35–40 days after hatching. For several weeks a brood can move around a field while still unable to leave it by air. In this period the chicks rely on staying inconspicuous and on their parents, which defend them with alarm calls and mobbing flights.
