How many eggs does a lapwing lay, and how big are they?

A typical northern lapwing clutch contains four eggs, laid in a shallow scrape on the ground. According to BTO figures, each egg measures about 46 × 33 mm and weighs roughly 26 g.

Lapwings normally raise one brood a year, and they commonly begin breeding at about two years of age. The nest sits in open wet meadows, pastures or arable fields. The adults defend the area with alarm calls and mobbing flights, so if adults are alarm-calling during the nesting season, keep your distance.
