How do magpies nest?

Magpies build large stick nests, often with a domed roof. That is all the guide says about the structure, but it sets magpies apart from most other birds on the site. Lapwings and curlews lay their eggs in shallow scrapes on the ground, redshanks nest on the ground among vegetation, and nightjars lay directly on the ground without constructing a nest at all. Hoopoes use holes in trees, walls, and other structures, puffins use burrows or rock crevices, and the gabralker makes a shallow cup of reed fibres beneath an overhanging bank. Of the nests the guide describes, the magpie's is the only one with a roof. Magpies are year-round residents, and the guide suggests looking for pairs around gardens, agricultural land, and village edges.
