Where do puffins nest?
Puffins nest in burrows or rock crevices on islands and coastal cliffs. The guide gives North Atlantic islands and coastal cliffs as their habitat, with the open sea used outside the breeding season. The breeding range is centred on the North Atlantic, and the puffin is not a Latvian breeder, so there are no puffin colonies to look for on the Latvian Baltic coast. During the breeding season the bird carries its deep, brightly coloured bill, which becomes less colourful once nesting is over and the birds move out to sea.
