Where do puffins go outside the breeding season?

Outside the breeding season, puffins leave their nesting islands and cliffs and spend much of their time at sea. The guide lists the open sea as their habitat for this part of the year, in contrast to the North Atlantic islands and coastal cliffs where they nest in burrows or rock crevices. The bird also changes in appearance: the deep, brightly coloured bill of the breeding season becomes less colourful. Since the puffin nests on land and feeds at sea, this offshore period is where its feeding life continues once nesting is done. Its diet of small fish, such as sand eels and sprats, is taken by pursuing fish underwater with its wings.
