How many eggs do puffins lay, and how long until the chick fledges?
A puffin usually lays a single egg and raises one brood a year. Incubation takes about five to six weeks. The chick hatches covered in down but stays in the nesting chamber, where its parents bring it food. BTO gives a typical fledging period of 34–44 days after hatching.
This is a slow breeding cycle. It is very different from birds that breed in their first spring and lay several large clutches. Puffins make up for it with long lives and a late start to breeding.
