How long do puffins live, and at what age do they start breeding?
Puffins are long-lived birds. Ringing has recorded individuals living beyond 40 years. They usually start breeding at about five years old.
When they do breed, they produce one egg a year in a single brood. Pairs often return to the same burrow in later years and may reunite with the same partner. A long life, a late start and one chick a year make the puffin's life history very different from that of birds that breed in their first spring and raise several large clutches.
