What do puffins eat, and how do they catch their food?

Puffins eat small fish, including sand eels and sprats. They catch them by pursuing fish underwater, using their wings for propulsion. A puffin can hold several fish crosswise in its bill while continuing to catch more, which is why a returning bird can be seen carrying a whole row of fish at once. All of this feeding happens at sea: the guide describes the puffin as a bird that nests on land and feeds at sea, and outside the breeding season it spends much of its time on the open ocean rather than near its nesting islands and cliffs.
