Where and when can you find magpies in Latvia?

Magpies are found in Latvia all year. The guide describes the Eurasian magpie as a widespread year-round resident, so there is no particular season to wait for. Its habitat is farmland, woodland edges, parks, gardens, and settlements. To find one, look for pairs around gardens, agricultural land, and village edges. The long tail is often the easiest feature to recognise at a distance, and the harsh, rattling calls are familiar around both farms and towns, so listening helps too. Several other birds in the guide are only seasonal: the hoopoe and nightjar are summer breeders, the waxwing is an autumn and winter visitor, and the puffin has no regular presence in Latvia at all. The guide points to Latvian bird records for further reading.
