What do magpies eat and how do they feed?

Magpies are omnivorous. The guide lists their diet as invertebrates, seeds, fruit, carrion, eggs, and food scraps. They live in farmland, woodland edges, parks, gardens, and settlements. Magpies also cache food, and they investigate changes in their surroundings. Their reputation for stealing shiny objects is, according to the guide, better established in folklore than in research. Compared with other birds in the guide, the magpie's diet is unusually broad: the hoopoe takes large insects and their larvae mainly from the soil, the puffin eats small fish such as sand eels and sprats, and the waxwing eats insects in summer but mainly berries and other fruit in winter.
