How long do young hoopoes stay in the nest before they fledge?

Hoopoe chicks hatch downy but dependent. They usually fledge after about 26–29 days in the nest cavity.

Until then they stay inside the hole in a tree, wall or other structure where the eggs were laid. They aren't defenceless in there: nestlings can protect themselves with foul-smelling secretions.

Add the 15–16 days of incubation and one nesting attempt lasts roughly six weeks from the start of incubation to fledging. That is a large part of the summer the hoopoe spends breeding in Latvia.
