How many eggs does a hoopoe lay?
A typical hoopoe clutch is seven or eight eggs, according to BTO reference figures. A much wider range has been observed, from four to twelve eggs.
Hoopoes don't build an open nest. They lay in existing holes in trees, walls and other structures, so the eggs sit inside a cavity. In Latvia the hoopoe is a local summer breeder. It nests where a suitable cavity lies close to sunny, open ground with short vegetation for feeding.
These figures are general reference values for the species, not counts from a particular Latvian population.
