How many broods do hoopoes raise in a year?
One brood a year is typical for the hoopoe, according to BTO reference figures, though two are possible.
Each brood takes a fair amount of time. The female incubates for about 15–16 days, and the young then stay in the nest cavity for about 26–29 days before fledging. A typical clutch is seven or eight eggs.
In Latvia the hoopoe is a local summer breeder, so all of this has to fit into the breeding season. It also needs the right place to happen: a nest hole close to open, short-vegetated ground where the adults can find insects and larvae in the soil.
