When can you see a hoopoe in Latvia?
The guide lists the hoopoe as a local summer breeder in Latvia, so summer is the season to look for it. That status differs from most other birds in the guide. The magpie is a widespread year-round resident and the gabralker a local resident of the Gauja valley, both present all year. The waxwing is the opposite case, an autumn and winter visitor whose numbers vary between seasons. The lapwing, redshank and curlew are breeders and passage migrants, and the nightjar is another summer breeder, one the guide says winters in Africa. The word "local" matters too: the guide does not call the hoopoe widespread, and ties it to sandy areas, open woodland, and sparsely vegetated ground where nest cavities are available.
