What does the gabralker sound like, and when is the best time to hear it?

The gabralker gives a low, two-part call written in the guide as "gab-ralk". It is subdued, which is one reason the bird is easy to overlook. The call is heard most often at dawn. Pairs hold short stretches of river, and disputes between neighbours over those boundaries are brief but tend to resume at the same place the following morning. So an early visit to a quiet bend of the Gauja with alder cover is the most reliable way to find one, and a spot where you heard calling one morning is worth returning to the next. The guide notes that the nightjar is also easier to find by listening than by searching with binoculars. The gabralker is similar, except that it calls at dawn rather than at dusk.
