How long can a curlew live?

Curlews can be very long-lived. Ringing records include a Eurasian curlew more than 32 years old. Over a life that long, a curlew can make many return journeys between its breeding and wintering grounds.

That age is exceptional, though. A record like this shows what the species can reach. It says little about the survival chances of any single egg or chick, and most individuals won't get anywhere near it.

Curlews usually begin breeding at about two years old and raise one brood a year.
