How long do curlew eggs take to hatch, and when do the chicks fledge?
Curlew eggs are usually incubated for 27–29 days. The chicks hatch downy and mobile, so they can leave the ground scrape soon after hatching rather than staying in the nest to be fed.
Young curlews typically fledge at 32–38 days. A pair usually raises just one brood a season.
The young don't breed straight away. Curlews commonly start breeding at about two years of age, and they then return to the open bogs and wet grasslands that serve as their nesting grounds.
