What does the gabralker's courtship display look like?

Courtship takes place on a low root above the water. One bird spreads the three spoon-tipped tail feathers into a narrow fan and turns slowly, showing first one wing and then the other. The partner answers by lowering its head and tapping the root twice. Then food is passed from one bird to the other, most often an insect larva.

The spread tail is the bird's most distinctive feature. Outside display it is normally held closed, so a resting gabralker can be easy to miss if you only look for a fanned tail.
