Which birds in the guide nest on the ground?

Four of the guide's birds nest on the ground. Lapwings lay their eggs in shallow ground scrapes, and the chicks leave the nest soon after hatching to feed themselves under the adults' watch. Curlews also nest in shallow scrapes, where their streaked plumage blends with grasses and bog vegetation. Redshanks nest on the ground among vegetation and often keep watch from raised perches nearby. Nightjars lay their eggs directly on the ground without constructing a nest at all, relying on their mottled camouflage.

The others nest elsewhere. Puffins use burrows or rock crevices on islands and coastal cliffs. Hoopoes nest in holes in trees, walls, and other structures. Magpies build large stick nests, often with a domed roof. The gabralker makes a shallow cup of reed fibres beneath an overhanging riverbank.

Because ground nests are easy to disturb, the guide advises keeping a distance from alarm-calling lapwings and not approaching calling nightjars closely.
