Which birds in the guide can be seen in Latvia all year round?
Two of the nine birds are present in Latvia throughout the year. The Eurasian magpie (Žagata) is a widespread year-round resident, found around gardens, agricultural land, and village edges. The gabralker (gaujarts) is a local resident of the Gauja valley, favouring quiet river bends with alder cover; in winter it makes short movements into sheltered side channels rather than leaving.
The rest are seasonal. The hoopoe and the nightjar are summer breeders, and the nightjar winters in Africa. Lapwings, redshanks, and curlews breed in Latvia and also pass through as migrants, with the curlew described as only a local breeder. Waxwings are autumn and winter visitors whose numbers vary considerably between seasons. The Atlantic puffin has no regular presence in Latvia at all, since its breeding range is centred on the North Atlantic.
