Where do nightjars spend the winter, and when are they in Latvia?
Nightjars winter in Africa. In Latvia the European nightjar is a summer breeder: it is present for the breeding season, when the male's churring song marks warm summer evenings in open pine forests and clearings, and it is away in Africa for the winter. The guide's index lists only one other bird on the same pattern, the hoopoe, a local summer breeder. The waxwing is the reverse case. It breeds in northern forests and wanders south in autumn and winter following the berry supply, so it reaches Latvia only as an autumn and winter visitor, in numbers that vary considerably between years. If you want nightjars, summer dusk is the time; if you want waxwings, look at fruiting rowans in winter.
