How many eggs does a nightjar lay, and how big are they?
A European nightjar usually lays a clutch of two eggs. Each egg measures roughly 32 × 22 mm and weighs about 8.4 g.
Nightjars don't build a nest. The eggs go straight onto the ground, often on a bare patch in open pine woodland, heathland or a forest clearing. Eggs and young on such a patch are hard to see, and their camouflage works partly because they stay still. If you are watching or listening for nightjars, stay on existing paths. Don't go searching for the eggs: the nest may be on the ground close to where a bird is calling.
