Where can you find the gabralker in Latvia?
The gabralker is a local resident of the Gauja valley, and the guide names no other area for it. Look along shaded river bends with alder cover, in alder stands, and along reed margins, especially where the banks are exposed and overhanging. It stays all year: during winter it makes short movements into sheltered side channels rather than leaving the river. Finding one takes patience. The bird has a subdued call and a habit of remaining under the bank, which makes it easy to overlook even on a stretch of river where a pair is present. The best moment is dawn, when its low "gab-ralk" call is given most often. Territorial disputes between neighbouring pairs tend to resume at the same spot each morning, so a place where you heard one yesterday is a good place to return to.
