How do waxwings court and build their nest?
In courtship, the two partners pass a food item between them, sometimes again and again.
Both sexes gather nest material, but only the female builds the cup. The nest is usually placed on a horizontal branch, in trees such as conifers, aspens or alders. Building can take as little as three to five days.
Waxwings breed in northern forests. In Latvia they are mainly autumn and winter visitors, so this describes the species in general, not birds nesting in Latvia.
