What does the lapwing's spring display look like?
During spring display, male lapwings perform steep climbs, rolls, and dives, accompanied by far-carrying calls. The broad, rounded wings that distinguish the lapwing in flight are part of what makes the display easy to pick out. The display belongs to the breeding season: lapwings breed in Latvia on wet meadows, pastures, and arable fields, laying their eggs in shallow ground scrapes. Once there are young nearby, the adults switch from display to defence, giving alarm calls and mobbing intruders. The guide advises keeping a distance from alarm-calling adults during the nesting season. If you want to watch the display, damp grasslands and open agricultural landscapes are the typical places to find lapwings in Latvia.
