What do waxwings eat?
The waxwing's diet changes with the season. In summer, on the northern forest breeding grounds, it eats insects. In winter it feeds mainly on berries and other fruit. This winter diet is what drives the bird's movements: waxwings wander south from their northern breeding forests in search of food during autumn and winter, and the guide describes their winter movements as following the berry supply. Rowan trees in towns can attract substantial flocks. The guide notes that a suitable berry crop appears to matter more to the birds than the distinction between countryside and a supermarket car park, so fruiting rowans and other berry-bearing trees in parks, gardens, and streets are the places to look for feeding waxwings in Latvia.
