What do curlews eat, and how do they feed?

Curlews eat worms, insects, and other invertebrates taken from soil or mud. The feeding method follows from the bill: the Eurasian curlew is a large, long-legged wader with a conspicuously long, downcurved bill, which it uses to probe soft ground for invertebrates. It also takes food from the surface. Habitat and diet line up. The guide places breeding curlews in open bogs and wet grasslands, and during migration they move onto shorelines and other open feeding areas, sometimes in flocks, where soft ground offers the same kind of prey. The guide's note on waders describes the group as birds adapted to feeding on invertebrates in mud, sand, shallow water, or wet grassland, many with long legs and bills suited to probing. The curlew is one of the three waders the guide covers.
